Lepidium meyenii, more commonly known as maca, has exploded in popularity over the past few years. It has become a household name in the supplement industry due to its' dense nutritional value & long list of health benefits.

Maca root can benefit virtually everybody but before you try it, you should known there are three different types of maca - each with its' own set of unique properties and health benefits.

Are you wondering which type of maca is best for you? Check out our guide to the different types of maca below:

Yellow Maca

Yellow maca is the most common type of maca, accounting for roughly 60-70% of all the maca that is harvested. Yellow maca root is often suggested for daily use for long-term hormonal balance, stress relief, to reduce inflammation, and to support mental cognition.

Scientifically, yellow maca is the form of maca with the highest concentration of macamides, a unique compound found exclusively in maca root. Macamides are bioactive compound found in maca and largely responsible for its' numerous health benefits.

Red Maca

Red maca is more rare than its' yellow cousin, and is often referred to as the "feminine" side of maca root.

Red maca is unique in that it nourishes, stabilizes, and calms the body. It can be used to help improve conditions like anxiety and fatigue, although it is more often used for female reproductive health.

Clinically, red maca has shown to reduce the symptoms and severity of menopause, improve libido in both men and women, and significantly improve bone density - thus reducing the risk for osteoporosis.

In addition to the benefits listed above, red maca may help improve prostate health, reduce inflammation - particularly in the prostate, improve blood flow, and increase oxygen levels in the blood.

Black Maca

Black maca is thought of the "masculine" type of maca because it strengthens and supports the external part of the body.

Using black maca has been shown to improve athletic performance & endurance in male athletes and other research suggests it can increase muscle strength and muscle mass as well.

It also has been shown to improve the performance and health of the male reproductive system, unlike red maca, which has a greater impact on the female reproductive system.

Finally, black maca may also support mental focus and cognition, memory, and brain fog. It may also help men who are struggling with infertility as well, which has traditionally been one of its' main uses since maca was first discovered.
